Sharing our knowledge and experience is a core part of what makes Loom special – and that includes with the next generation of digital marketers. When we were approached by A-Level student Jasmine about completing her work experience with Loom, we were excited by the prospect of giving her insight into how a digital agency works.

We were impressed by Jasmine’s enthusiasm and curiosity about what we do, as she threw herself into learning about our Paid MediaSEO, and Multi-Channel strategy work.

As part of her tasks, Jasmine wrote a short account of her experience working with the team. Let’s take a look at how she got on…

Jasmine’s week of work experience at Loom Digital

Before I started my placement, I was very nervous as to what each day would entail. However, I was excited because I was interested in marketing and its job opportunities and I knew that I would enjoy whatever it was I was asked to do.

The team at Loom Digital instantly made me feel comfortable and at ease. From offering me drinks and food, to simply saying hello. They are a very friendly bunch of people who all get on well.

Although I knew I wanted to pursue marketing in my future studies, I had no idea what it had to offer, beyond social media marketing. So what I wanted to get out of my placement was to develop an understanding of what an integrated marketing strategy looks like, and to get a clearer idea of what area of digital marketing I am most interested in and want to pursue in the future.

My Loom taSKS

My first task of my placement was to complete a competitor analysis on several digital marketing agencies. I really enjoyed this as a first task because it was similar to what I was used to doing in school, so I felt comfortable and confident in my ability to complete it to a good standard. I used new tools like Google Search Console, Meta Ads and Google Ads, Ahref and Later Social.

Chloe gave me insight into organic social media. Her explanations always helped guide my understanding of the following task – which in this case was to design some social posts for a client’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages, using Canva. Using this tool was new to me but I took to it well thanks to Chloe’s introduction on how it worked. This task also included making social media captions for each post which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I especially enjoyed learning about content marketing. Before my placement I was unaware of this sector of digital marketing, and when I saw it on my schedule I thought “oh no I’m going to be writing pages and pages”, but I was soon educated on this marketing sector, and Chloe’s enthusiasm and explanations gave me a great understanding of what content marketing is – I immediately loved it! I got to design and write a new landing page and create a recommendations doc for their clients’ new blog page, which was my favourite task of the week.

Harry educated me on PPC and Paid Social. He is very friendly and easy to talk to. The key concept I learnt about PPC was how searching for keywords and implementing them into a brand’s titles and description impacts how much a brand is shown and seen on Google. When he first explained the tasks to me I was unsure, as it was all so new to me, however after confirmation and lots of questions, I got on with it. For the first task I was given the opportunity to create a campaign structure, using Google Ads keyword planner for keyword research.

I then went on to developing ad copy for two different ads which I found especially interesting because it taught me how important it is to design a captivating heading and description in order to entice customers to a brand.

After this, I had the opportunity to design ads for one of Loom’s clients’ summer sale, allowing me to unleash my creativity on Canva, which was another highlight of my week.

Despite knowing nothing about SEO before my placement, Jack improved my understanding of the SEO concepts through detailed explanations, including keyword searching, page popularity, crawlability, and competitor research. He was immediately kind, going over everything I needed to know in great detail. I then explored a range of tools which aid these concepts, taught to me by Jack, this included sights such as Screaming Frog SEO Spider, SEMRush, and Ahrefs.

Before my placement I refused to believe I would work in an office, but because of Looms’ work environment and team unity, I now have a positive outlook on office jobs, minus the neck cramps and back aches!

My favourite part of being able to work with Loom Digital was being able to experience what it would be like to work in the marketing field. It has really helped me to narrow down my options of what sector in marketing that I would like to specialise in – content creation, organic social media, and paid social.

One highlight of my experience at Loom was having the opportunity to be independent. It showed me how different (and personally, nicer) it was to be operating in a work environment compared to a school environment. I had my own area in the office and once briefed, got to complete the tasks independently, unless help was needed, which I enjoyed the experience of. The Loom team were also incredibly helpful and friendly, telling me where all the best shops were and letting me join in on their Mario Kart games.

And by the end of the week I can confidently say I can see myself working at a digital marketing agency in the future.
